ギリシア語の be 動詞 εἶναι の真理用法(veridical use)*1に着目して、これをギリシアの存在論(パルメニデス―プラトン―アリストテレス)における「ある」(Being)の中心的な語義とし、J. S. ミル流の繋辞‐実在二分法(copula-existence dichotomy)にもとづくギリシア哲学批判を退ける論文。
この論考の諸々のテーゼはその後さまざまなかたちで補足・修正されている *2 が、「ある」の真理用法を第一に据えるという点は一貫している。

(追記:Wilson 論文まで扱っていると夜が明けてしまうことに気づいたのでこれは省略する。第四巻の魂の三分説において一見オミットされているかに見える理性と気概との葛藤は第一巻のトラシュマコスにおいて先取りされているのだ、というようなことが論じられていた。)
